U-shape seating chart maker
Pre-set to a 26-desk horseshoe below — the layout for discussion-heavy classes, where everyone can see everyone and you can reach every student in two steps. Free · no signup · nothing uploaded unless you turn on sync.
Getting the U right
The horseshoe's superpower is sightlines — and its trap is the corners, where neighbors sit closest and side conversations start. Two RosterOwl habits help: mark your chattiest pairs "keep apart" — a shuffle then never seats them side by side, not even around the corners — and paint the two seats beside your teaching spot as the near-teacher zone for students who need the front. Then shuffle until it clicks.
Class bigger than the U? Add an inner row of desks in arrange mode (a "double U") or park extra students in the tray until you've rearranged. Smaller class? Empty desks print as empty — or delete them and tighten the horseshoe.
This page is the full RosterOwl seating chart maker, just opened on a horseshoe. Decide the U isn't working? Switch the room to rows or table groups from the same screen — your class list, keep-apart rules and locked seats all come with you.

Questions teachers ask
Who counts as "next to each other" in a U?
Immediate neighbors along the U — including around the corners, where students actually sit closest. Keep-apart pairs are never placed side by side.
Can I make a double horseshoe?
Yes — start from the U template, then add desks in arrange mode and drag them into an inner arc. The chart prints whatever your real room looks like.
Rows one term, U-shape the next — do I re-enter my class?
No. Your class list is separate from the room, so switching layouts is one template click — names, rules and absences all carry over.
