RosterOwl

Random group maker for the classroom

Balanced groups from your class list — honoring your keep-apart rules, skipping absent students. Free · no signup · nothing uploaded unless you turn on sync.

Why teachers use it

Fair, not chaotic

Groups come out even — within one student of each other (keep-together sets bigger than the group size stay whole, so they can run over) — and your keep-apart pairs stay apart, unlike a plain name-list randomizer.

One roster, shared

The same class list powers your seating chart and your groups. Marked someone absent this morning? They're skipped here automatically.

Print and go

One-page PDF with numbered group boxes — project it or pin it up. Ink-saver mode for the school printer.

Private by architecture

Runs entirely in your browser. No accounts, no uploads, nothing stored anywhere but your device.

Questions teachers ask

Can it keep certain students out of the same group?

Yes — the same keep-apart and keep-together rules you set in the seating chart apply here (toggle "Honor seating rules"). If a combination is impossible, it says so plainly instead of quietly breaking a rule.

What happens with a class of 22 and groups of 4?

You get six groups: four groups of 4 and two groups of 3 — never a lonely leftover group of 2 unless the math forces it.

Do I have to retype my class list?

No. If you've used the seating chart, your classes are already here. One roster powers every RosterOwl tool.

One roster, every other tool

Your class list is already saved in this browser — every tool below picks it up, with no names retyped and nothing uploaded unless you turn on sync.
